Does God Have A Mission For You?He is called "the sergeant at arms." The "sergeant at arms"
is an officer of an organization who preserves order and executes commands. He is the one in the Congress who announces:
"Mr. Speaker, The President of the United States" as the President enters the room before the State of the Union
address. That is one of his purposes - to prepare the way for the President.
In the Bible there was a man
whose purpose was to prepare the way for the Messiah. His name was John the Baptist. He is called the Baptist
not because that was the church he went to but because that was what he did. He baptized people as a sign of their
repentance of the sins they had committed. Baptism is one of those words from the Greek language that our Bibles don't
translate into English. Our Bibles just put English letters for the Greek word. The word in Greek for baptism
means "to immerse in water." John should be called, "John, the Immerser." He was preparing
people for the coming of Jesus. John identified himself "in the words of Isaiah the prophet, "I am the voice
on one calling in the desert, 'Make straight the way for the Lord'" (John 1:23). When John saw Jesus coming to
him he announced to others, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world" (John 1:29). John
was referring to Jesus' purpose - his death on the cross taking the punishment for the sin of the world - our sin. John's
purpose was to prepare the way for Jesus and his ministry. If you are a Christian, how might God use your life to "prepare
the way for Jesus?" How might God use your words and actions to point people to Jesus - the Lamb of God?
